Cat Cardiology

Heart diseases are commonly observed in older cats; however, some younger cats may be born with a heart defect or may also suffer from heart disease. Typical signs that your cat has a heart problem are:

  • Coughing
  • Trouble breathing
  • Open-mouth breathing
  • Rapid breathing
  • Swollen abdomen
  • Weight loss
  • Sudden Collapse

If your cat is experiencing these problems, they need to be seen by us as soon as possible.  These problems can be life-threatening. Call us to schedule an appointment (706-568-4848).

Animal General Hospital provides screening tests for congenital abnormalities, heart murmurs, and cardiac diseases that may show up later in your cat’s life. We also offer cardiac tests such as echocardiograms and electrocardiograms.

An echocardiogram is like an ultrasound of the heart. It allows us to measure:

  • The thickness of your cat’s heart’s muscular walls
  • How well your cat’s heart contracts
  • How well your cat’s heart valves are functioning

Once we have thoroughly confirmed the condition of your cat’s heart, we can prescribe the appropriate medications and routines to keep your pet’s heart as healthy as possible.

The signs listed may also be the sign of other severe problems in your cat.  Please do not hesitate to call us (706-568-4848) if your cat is experiencing any of these signs. The sooner we examine your cat, the better the outcome.

Everyone was so wonderful from the moment we walked in. So kind and attentive. Dr. W and his staff made us feel as if we were their only patients that day. I never felt as though we were being rushed through to get to the next appointment. Everything was explained thoroughly and all questions were patiently answered. Would highly recommend!

We had a great experience bringing our kitten Sam to Animal General! The staff was kind and caring and was great at communicating with us through the whole process. We can’t wait to bring our other pets there for their vet needs.

Always a wonderful and positive experience!

Super friendly and helpful staff- The vet was compassionate and very knowledgeable. My puppy came in with a fractured femur and right away received lots of love and attention. I know I left him in good hands.
