Dog Behavior

Dogs typically enjoy being around humans and mostly want to please us. However, we still need to train them to avoid some of their harmful and destructive behaviors.

 Dog Behavior Problems

The two most common behavioral problems we see in dogs are aggression and scavenging. At the same time, there are many other behaviors your dog may exhibit that you should consider harmful. Of all the behavioral challenges you might have with your dog, aggression and scavenging are the most dangerous for people and animals your dog may come in contact with.

One item to note is that some behaviors might be considered a problem for one owner and acceptable for another owner. An example of this might be barking. While some owners may not desire for their dog to bark, other owners may want their dog to bark as notification of someone approaching their home.

If you notice a behavior that is new and unusual in your dog’s routine, schedule an appointment with us so that we can rule out any health problems as the cause.

Bad Habits

Bad habits like guarding their resources or toys, jumping on people, sitting or lying on furniture, begging, clinging, and taking over your bed are often encouraged by your behavior toward your dog. If you don’t want your dog on the furniture, you must set well-defined boundaries and be consistent. It’s also essential that you provide your dog the safety, comfort, and enough food so they won’t have to claim it for themselves.

Instinctive Behavior

Behaviors that are instinctive include:

  • Digging
  • Chewing
  • Chasing
  • Rolling in dirt

If you observe any of these behaviors from your dog, it is perfectly normal. If needed, you can train your dog to minimize or stop these behaviors.

Health Issues

If your dog has any health issues, it can also cause your dog to act out, become aggressive, or growl and bite. Many dogs also struggle with separation anxiety. Your dog may make a mess in your home and may even destroy things while alone at home. Excessive licking, eating poop, defecating, and urinating indoors can also be signs of illness or injury.

If you notice any negative behaviors with your dog, call us (706-568-4848) to schedule an appointment. Our caring veterinarians will help you discover the root of the problem and will help your dog move toward better behavior.

Dog Behavior

Everyone was so wonderful from the moment we walked in. So kind and attentive. Dr. W and his staff made us feel as if we were their only patients that day. I never felt as though we were being rushed through to get to the next appointment. Everything was explained thoroughly and all questions were patiently answered. Would highly recommend!

We had a great experience bringing our kitten Sam to Animal General! The staff was kind and caring and was great at communicating with us through the whole process. We can’t wait to bring our other pets there for their vet needs.

Always a wonderful and positive experience!

Super friendly and helpful staff- The vet was compassionate and very knowledgeable. My puppy came in with a fractured femur and right away received lots of love and attention. I know I left him in good hands.
