Cat Dental

Clean teeth and healthy gums are crucial to your cat’s health. Infections are common in the mouth and can go undetected for long periods. Our veterinary staff regularly performs oral exams, dental cleanings, and periodontal care as part of our comprehensive pet health care.

Some signs your cat may have a dental problem are:

  • Red or swollen gums
  • Bad breath (can be an early sign of a dental issue)
  • Painful eating
  • Drooling
  • Dropping food when eating
  • Blood coming from the mouth
  • Weight loss
  • Decreased appetite

If your cat displays any of these signs, contact us (706-568-4848) to schedule an appointment to have your cat’s teeth examined.  Depending on the cause of the problem, we may need to sedate your cat for a full oral examination including radiographs of their mouth and possible teeth extractions.

If left untreated, cat dental problems can often lead to more significant systemic problems due to oral bacteria entering the bloodstream and damaging the kidneys, heart, and liver. Animal General Hospital offers exceptional veterinary dentistry services from experienced, qualified veterinary professionals.

Dental Care at Home

It is a good idea to brush your cat’s teeth at home! We recommend cleaning your cat’s teeth at least once every forty-eight hours for the best results. Most cats can be trained for toothbrushing, and many learn to enjoy it. Try to make it a bonding time for both of you. Pet toothpaste comes in many flavors that pets love, like vanilla, malt, and poultry.

  1. Start by applying a small amount of pet-specific toothpaste to your finger. Then quickly and gently rub along the top teeth and gum line. Do this every few days for about four weeks.
  2. Next, place a finger brush on your finger, add toothpaste, and do the same thing for about four more weeks.
  3. As your cat becomes comfortable with the process, you can move up to an actual toothbrush.

Dental Treats & Toys

We recommend using dental treats, chews, and toys to help with your cat’s dental health. Each of these items can benefit your cat’s dental health:

  • Tartar control treats for cats. You can feed several of these treats a day to help control tartar and plaque buildup.
  • Science Diet Oral Care for cats. This is a good alternative food for cats and will promote not only a healthy mouth but also overall good health.
  • Hill’s Prescription Diet T/D. This diet can be used as a daily diet or as treats.
  • Breathalyser water additive in their drinking water.

Everyone was so wonderful from the moment we walked in. So kind and attentive. Dr. W and his staff made us feel as if we were their only patients that day. I never felt as though we were being rushed through to get to the next appointment. Everything was explained thoroughly and all questions were patiently answered. Would highly recommend!

We had a great experience bringing our kitten Sam to Animal General! The staff was kind and caring and was great at communicating with us through the whole process. We can’t wait to bring our other pets there for their vet needs.

Always a wonderful and positive experience!

Super friendly and helpful staff- The vet was compassionate and very knowledgeable. My puppy came in with a fractured femur and right away received lots of love and attention. I know I left him in good hands.
